Alive for 50 years thanks to the kidney her brother gave her

Monique Beaupré, aged 70, has been living with her older brother Jean-Claude's kidney for 50 years. Jean-Claude died in 2018, and the organ he donated to his sister is 92 years old. The operation took place at the Royal Victoria Hospital, where Mrs. Beaupré continues to be followed.

"It's extraordinary," notes MUHC Organ and Tissue Donation Nurse Clinician Wendy Sherry. "It's the first time I've seen someone make 50 years with a kidney transplant. It means the match with his brother was almost perfect [...] It just goes to show how much living donation can change someone's life," says Wendy , on the occasion of National Organ and Tissue Donation Awareness Week.
